Common Disorders

Phobias and fears
Phobias and fears

'Studies indicate that up to 12% of people have phobias at some stage in their lives' (National Phobic Society)

Fear is an emotion that we feel when we encounter a real danger and our 'flight or flight' response becomes activated. A phobia creates similar, if not more intense, feelings but differs from a fear in that there is no rational threat or danger. Phobias are often (but not always) associated with an early childhood trauma that resurfaces in our adult lives when our anxiety levels are high. Phobias and fears can have a devastating effect on daily life but many people do not seek help because they are embarrassed, aware that their response is illogical. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is highly successful at dealing with phobias, firstly by helping the client gain an understanding of why the mind behaves in this way and secondly by using Hypnotherapy techniques to alter templates.

Anxiety
Anxiety

Anxiety and stress are interchangeable and can take many psychological and physical forms including panic attacks, irritable bowel syndrome, skin disorders, nail biting, obsessional compulsive disorder, headaches, infertility and sexual problems. High levels of anxiety and stress will also affect our ability to cope with pain. Anxiety is not something that we are born with but it is something we can learn to control. By understanding how the mind works and by changing negative thought patterns, anxiety can be reduced and managed.

Depression
Depression

Between 8-12% of the population experience depression in any year
(Office for National Statistics Psychiatric Morbidity)

Depression is an extremely common psychological disorder that is becoming increasingly prevalent in the Western world. Depression can encompass a wide range of symptoms and suffers can have all or some of the following symptoms: loss of pleasure or interest, low energy or mood, difficulty focusing, low self esteem or sleeping disturbances and distinctive weight loss or gain. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help treat depression with great effect. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help a sufferer to challenge their thought patterns, focus on problem solving and understand the mechanics of the brain.

Confidence
Confidence

Confidence is often low in people who are suffering from anxiety, depression or stress and may leave those effected feeling worthless and inadequate. By changing the way those with low confidence react to situations and reducing anxiety levels Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help to become confident and positive. Whether it is everyday confidence levels or for an event like public speaking or a driving test, Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy can help to re-educate response patterns.

Smoking
Smoking

'Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking'
('Cognitive reactions to smoking relapse', New Scientist, Vol 135)

Often clients who want help stopping a smoking habit have tried everything from patches to cold turkey, but still struggle to quit. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help enormously in ditching the cigarette habit by removing the desire to smoke from the mind. This creates a feeling of getting rid of something that isn't wanted rather than giving up something enjoyable. Easy.

Weight Loss
Weight Loss

Clients who want help to lose weight have usually tried every diet under the sun, all to no avail and possibly some harm. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy takes a holistic approach to the client's life, helping to re-establish control in their lives so that they are able to make the correct food and exercise choices. Hypnosis can help by harnessing inner motivation and altering behavioural patterns.

Fertility
Fertility

Reproduction is a highly complex and intricate biological system that can be disrupted and unsettled by any degree of psychological stress. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be used to support couples trying to conceive by helping the client to achieve optimum fertility. This is usually done by reducing stress, altering negative belief patterns and removing psychological blocks. Hypnotherapy has been proven to increase both natural conception chances and IVF success.

Hypnobirthing
Childbirth fears

"The use of hypnosis as an aid in preparation for labour and delivery reduces complications, surgery, and hospital stays and shows direct medical benefit to Mother and Child"
(The Journal of Family Practice)
Unfortunately in our culture the belief system surrounding childbirth is often based on the expectation of a long, scary, medicalised and agonizing experience rather than a happy, peaceful, positive one. Maddy is passionate about helping couples prepare for and achieve a calm and relaxed birthing experience, however and where ever they choose to birth their baby.

Maddy teaches Hypnobirthing classes (link to classes) that are specifically designed to dispel fears surrounding childbirth. Couples who attend learn how the mind and body should work together during labour and how a calm, relaxed mind has a huge effect on the physical birthing process. When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth, nature is free to function in the same well-designed manner that it does with (take out ‘all’) other mammals.
Maddy is a qualified HypnoBirthing instructor and a member of The Hypnobirthing Association.

Chronic Pain
Pain

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is very effective in relieving and controlling pain. Long term, chronic pain can be debilitating and exhausting and acute pains can be extremely uncomfortable. Stress, anxiety and depression all have a significant heightening effect on our ability to tolerate pain. By understanding how the mind works clients can learn to manage and reduce stress and in turn, their pain. Techniques and skills that you can use at home will also be explained. However, Maddy would insist that a Doctor had diagnosed the cause of the pain before you begin a treatment program with her.

Performance
Sports under-performance

'Sooner or later those who win are those who think they can'

There is a long history of hypnosis in the field of sport and you will not need to look very hard to find many professional sportsmen and women that use hypnosis to improve their performance. Of course, you do not have to be at professional level to gain benefit. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can improve focus, self-belief and motivation, which all have an effect on success. Maddy uses a range of techniques such as visualisations and mental rehearsal to help you think successfully and achieve your sporting goals.

IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome

For those suffering from IBS life can become uncomfortable, distressing and restricted. Although no cause has yet been identified the medical profession are in agreement that stress and anxiety are, at the very least, significant contributing factors. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help clients manage anxiety levels, deal more effectively with stress and learn relaxation techniques, all of which can provide relief from symptoms.
